Comorbidities Associated with FASD
背景
Background
Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder ( FASD ) is associated with a number of comorbidities, due to the permanent impact of prenatal fetal alcohol exposure .
Our objective is to identify comorbidities that co-occur in FASD individuals and to evaluate the general morbidity of comorbidities in FASD individuals.
方法
Methods
We have done a systematic document retrieval study, by using multiple e-book catalog databases, in order to retrieve reports of FASD individual comorbidities and causes of death that published until July 2012.
The retrieval included original studies of peer-reviewed journals that published in English.
We used the following criteria to determine quality of the study ----to use a established FASD diagnostic guide, research settings, data collection methods, and size of samples.
Conditions of all comorbidities must be encoded according to the 10th revision of International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10).
In order to evaluate the general morbidity of FAS individuals’ comorbidities, we ran a meta analysis and assumed a random effects model.

结果
Findings
127 of the 5,068 studies met the qualification standards for data extraction.
Among these studies, we identified 428 comorbidities that co-occurred in FASD individuals, which covered 18 out of 22 chapters of ICD-10.
The commonest diseases were mentioned in chapters of congenital malformations, malformations, chromosomal abnormalities, mental and behavior disorders.
Among all 1, 728 FAS participants, 33 studies reported data frequently.
the 5 comorbidities (50%~91%) with the highest general morbidity include aberrations of peripheral nervous system, special sensation and behavior; receptive language deficit, chronic serous otitis media, and expressive language disorders. These were all abnormal outcomes of functional studies.
解读
Interpretation
The high morbidity of comorbidities in FASD individuals highlights the importance of evaluating alcohol exposure of fetus as a major clinical risk factor of comorbidities.
The adverse effects of alcohol on developing fetuses led to many preventable disabilities. Therefore, alcohol consumption during pregnancy is considered as a global public health problem.
