Mediterranean diet and depression

Diet is essential to mental health. For patients with severedepression, the severity of the symptoms was significantly reduced after takingthe Mediterranean diet.

Inone of the earliest randomized controlled trials, the researchers studied theeffects of fish oil supplemented with Mediterranean diet on patients withsevere depression, and found that diet was associated with reduction ofdepressive symptoms.

The study was published online at Nutritional Neuroscienceon December 18.

Population studies show a link between diet and depression.The researchers point out that the current study is only the second randomizedcontrolled trial of Mediterranean diet interventions in patients with severedepression.

To further investigate the impact of the Mediterranean dieton mental health and quality of life in patients with severe depression, theresearchers recruited 152 adults 18 to 65 years (105 women and 47 men). 38% ofparticipants had depression, and 36% of participants took antidepressants.

参与者被随机分配接受传统的地中海饮食(n=75)或传统的地中海饮食补充鱼油或一项控制干预(n=77)。
Participants were randomized to receive a traditionalMediterranean diet (n=75) or a traditional Mediterranean diet supplemented byfish oil or a control intervention (n=77).

At 3 months and 6 months, participants were assessed atbaseline using a proven, reliable device. Major mental health outcomes wereassessed using a depression, anxiety and stress scale, and a quality of lifeassessment.

The researchers found that the Mediterranean diet wassignificantly associated with lower anxiety, negative emotions, better copingand overall quality of life. The researchers said that the Mediterranean dietis not just food, but also a lifestyle.

Therole of diet in mental health is underestimated

The researchers also found the association between food groups and mentalhealth outcomes. For example, eating more vegetables is associated with adecrease in stress and an increase in positive emotions, and more fruit isassociated with a decrease in anxiety and an increase in positive emotions.

Eatinga variety of vegetables and fruits can also improve mental health outcomes.Eating a traditional Mediterranean diet also reduced the number of participantseating take-out food and unhealthy snacks.

社交互动对提高参与者的心理健康水平也起着重要作用。
Social interaction also plays animportant role in improving the mental health of participants.
